In December 2015 the People’s Street Kitchen of Chios Island in Greece was founded by Ifty Patel, a loveable chef from the UK, and beloved local man Kostas Tanainis. Since the beginning, PSK has been an independent, volunteer-run kitchen. PSK has served hundreds of thousands of nourishing vegan meals to refugees arriving on Chios Island after making the dangerous trek across the sea from Turkey. The cook learned his trade from his mother and, although he cooks a variety of dishes, the Syrian ones are the most-loved.
The team now prepares meals for up to 150 volunteers working with NGOs. One or two CERST volunteers drive 4-days each week to the kitchen to chop vegetables, clean the pots and pans, label containers, and deliver the food.
